An extremely well-researched response, phew! Just a few notes to add to it. Apparently, the German troops were in fact from Sudetenland and spoke Czech, true to authenticity. This emerges when they want to surrender from their trenches, and are clearly not speaking German. They are shot dwon. I believe this is in contravention to the Geneva Convention which stated that soldiers can legitimately surrender if they give a certain distance. It was also interesting to remark that all the wall painted adverts were of alcoholic drinks; Dubonnet and pastis. Some of Mr. Spielberg's favourite drinks, perhaps. Although it was very much a D-day film, it still had many resonances of Vietnam films. I think Spielberg should make one from that era. His next film is set in 1972, so maybe some reference will be made to it.
