Review

The big painting with the virgin in the bright red dress on the green grass background is alarming. But it's attributed to the workshop of Durer, not the good man itself, so we can't really love it for it does not have the cachet of paintings which are said to have been done by the master himself. Interesting how hard it is to trust ones own judgment when the label is doubtful.

The drawings and woodcuts are great in all their glorious detail. Durer's animals are vital and idiosyncratic, and when he really gets going you get an effect like a colouring in book, his pen has an ability to define all it describes making things crystal frozen in outline and time.
