short story on www.laurahird.com/showcase/bhupindermahi.html Honour is a man thing. Something that exists for men to maintain their social position, and retain their control over women. This story looks at honour in a muslim family and in a chilling yet poetic narrative it strips the idea of honour to its starkest terms, the killing of a young girl in order that her father and brother save face. For what? Smiling? Women are not property, but this is how they are still seen, no matter where in the world we are. Safi's mother is an active participant in this notion - the story does not absolve women of their responsibility. Safi is a reminder of the male tradition and its inherent violence.
