Review

Being a film student doing a module on the them of race and gender, I found films such as Brown Sugar a massive help in seeing how hip-hop is more than just music. One question I was faced with was how romance v's violence in films such as Brown Sugar, while this may not be clear at first looking deeper into it, it becomes much clearer that it takes place through the metaphor of hip-hop, which is used thoughout the film. Sidney is writing a book which is at the certain and heart of the film, it is not till we our half way through the film we begin to realise that Sidney describes her relationship with Dre as hip-hop. Dre leaves the job he's worked so hard for because they no longer represent the true meaning of hip-hop, it's not about guns and violence but simple about how it makes you feel, hip-hop is romance and we see Dre battle with his single brown sugar against the group he left his job over, so it is here we see how romance v's violence.
