The tea buildings are Mummery's new home, and the place is a maze with funny shaped galleries, though the space for this Akkerman show increased its beauty, with only one useable wall and bluegray floors, seemingly ad hoc.

Akkerman only paints self-portraits, which should be a bore, but has allowed him to reach a fluency not seen much in painting these days. They are compelling. I remember odd colours, like a face in the dark, orange skin and blue backgrounds, the eyebrows whipped on with a quick and true dash of the brush. The hair changing and knobbly face less important than painting's transcendence.

A good show.
