urgency, immediacy. utterly and hopelessly lacking in these qualities. the painting dept. at the RCA under the captaincy of Graham Crowley, seems to have lurched further in the direction of meretricious paint techniques and the dullest, most frightened, derivative, staid painting on canvas. As if every student has the stuffing knocked out of them, and then is tortured until they confess to not believing in painting as a free and imaginative act, and declaring painting only to be a way of making a laborious craft commodity for the pleasure of pusillanimous patrons and corporate dunderheads. the rest of the show is the usual mix, the photography looking very tired down in the basement.
