Review

Went to see Red Hot Chili Peppers at City of Manchester Stadium last night (Friday 18th June), where the band played a superb set to a capacity crowd, although I did leave the venue with a bitter taste in my mouth.

Why? Because the RHCP were calling their own fans fascists and assholes! Apparently the first support act Chicks on Speed were booed and had cups thrown at them during their performance (which I missed due to a growing thirst), which upset the Chili Peppers enough for them to lecture us, during their own set later that evening, about opening our minds to different types of music, and telling us we were fascists if we didn't. This lecture began with singer Anthony, saying if he "was a kid born in Manchester, and a big-ass rock show came to town he would be grateful to see any bands on the bill and would respect them". Firstly, don't insult me by suggesting that nothing ever happens in Manchester, and that we should get on our hands and knees to worship the Californians and be so grateful for their presence. Has this guy never heard of The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Oasis, Simply Red (well, maybe not Simply Red), etc.

I don't agree with hurling objects or abuse at any performer.... if you don't like it walk away. But what I don't like even more is being told I'm a fascist asshole.

The final word of the show from the band was guitarist John telling us to "go out and buy the Chicks on Speed CD, as its the only way you assholes can redeem yourselves."

Fuck off......... I'll think twice about buying Red Hot Chili Peppers CDs in future, never mind Chicks on Speed.
