On the way to the station in King's Lynn, I came across a small, greying dog who was almost knocked over by a car, it had to swerve to avoiding obliviating the mut. The errant canine turned out to be called Hugo and lived at 5 Riverside, and had details of a phone number. After trying this number to no avail, I inquired of some innocent , and helpful, bystanders as to Hugo's whereabouts. They pointed me in the right direction. After craning my neck which, as another helpful Lynnian told me, gave me the appearance of holding a heavy load, I reached the rightful owner's home. This was interestingly surrounded by a ditch which gave it the appearance of a moat, the fallen gate the portcullis. Various DIY items were strewn about the garden. After a little wait, a young man ,protecting his manhood with a white towel answered the door and took the dog back into his conjugal home, explaining his wandering on grounds of a hole in the gate and Hugo's passion for burrowing out of the garden. He didn't swoon with horror when I revealed, as my phone message did, that his best friend narrowly avoided being taken to doggy-do heaven, if it hadn't been for animal-loving deft driver. And also the involvement of yours truly. Hugo's master promptly decided to end our conversation and I negotiated my way out of his fortified castle. On walking down Riverside, I came across the man who told me of no.5 and responded to my previous account with the many sightings of Hugo wandering dangerously along Wooton Road. Something tells me that this wasn't to be his last. Still, I had added at least another evening to our adventurous canine's life adventure and had fulfilled one of the good deeds, which were asked of me shortly after joining the cubs in 1985.
