Aren't drawings boring, why do they bother putting them up? I was saying. Then this Friedrich caught my eye. A big empty sky, the best I have seen, is made with just the edges washed white and the rest the blousy paper. The bottom fifth of the painting is a dog with an old man figuring a cross, the grass and bushes of the landscape are curved pen strokes repeated. This is the economy of genius.
