Review

This film was a totally groovy unexpected hit in my world. I had no pre-conceptions so nothing could disappoint. It is of course a film about the comic series of the same name, coming out of Cleveland, Ohio in the late seventies and early eighties. Picard, the creator, depicts his humdrum life, within the black and white etchings of the comic. The film overlaps with the real man, and the character playing him, in a throughly Woody Allen-esque way. The similarities don't end there, he is also a gloomy, neurotic guy. Only far more mundane, in his context of a suburban back water ( all the house look like those in Roseanne). It really works. It features his friendship with comic perv legend Robert Crum, and stars the daughter from 'About Schmidt' the one who marries the goon with the mullet. Performances are outstanding, there are some really amusing, unique chracters here, that can only spring from real life. Watch this, even if you don't know much about or care for the American comic scene.
