Watched the artists in a BBC4 documentary series, and they almost all seemed like their best days were behind them, bitter with the bile of short-lived fame and importance, I thought artists were meant to get better as they got older (see Picasso/Matisse,/Goya)

This show shows their heyday. All their attempts to escape the grip of American culture, by imitating it, or European art, by trivialising it. And their failure, their salad daze were wilted before they had stewed in the vinaigrette of regret and times passed. Their movement was minimal, their art looks all the time to be trying hard without inspiration, minor and attention seeking, and stiff with ideas and a little talent, but none of the freedom of important art.

No wonder they're bitter.
