Review

This terrible film was much more American than French and should have been set in New York, the reason it's in Paris is to make it more 'romantic'. It was so complacently neurotic, like early Woody Allen without the humour. The film did achieve a certain naturalism, which made me feel as if I was trapped on a bus forced to listen to a particularly irritating conversation (their poor chauffeur). I kept wanting to punch Delpy and Hawke. Especially infuriating was Delpy's 'save the world' speech and her 'I love my cat' faces. The other relationships that they talked about were completely unbelievable. Delpy's character's boyfriend is a political photographer and her flat is covered in old family photos but clearly no photos taken by a professional.

I didn't see the first film, but this one seemed to be no more than a short appendix for committed fans. On it's own it didn't work and I left feeling totally cheated. There are much better conversations I'd prefer to overhear, although this film was actually more like two occasionally overlapping monologues.
