Review

Specialling involves keeping constant surveillance over a patient, to make sure that they do no harm to themselves or, not in this case, other people. To protect my charge's anonymity, I have used an initial that is not his own. When I arrived on the ward, P... was watching the Olympics on television; I joined in. Some events had a soporific effect, especially the men's double volleyball, which with its brief, jerky movements sent P... to sleep. He had much more interest in the later events, including the speed cycling, whose seemingly unfair rules bemused us and kept us alert. At 5pm we went for a walk downstairs, and talked about P...'s youth in Essex, and life in the 50s as he remembered it. This gave me the opportunity to recall the various bus routes in East London/Essex, some of which remain the same. Namely the 20 and the 145. At 6pm, we returned to P...'s living quarters and entertained some more Olympic events, as dinner was slowly consumed. Perhaps due to the injection of food, noone fel sleepy. The night nurse arrived 20 minutes early and gave me the opportunity to record these memorable events.
