Review

I arrived half-way through the air display but I had experienced some of it through the confines of a hospital ward. I wonder how advisable the deafening sounds and air assaults of Her Majesty's airborne forces were to the convalescing patients, some of whom were recovering from heart attacks. Being a war veteran to boot, such provocative scenes are hardly conducive to rest and relaxation. Nonetheless, a fabulous time was had by all, as we gaped and gawped at the various planes who flew up, down, across and, in the case of some, hovered in the bay. Some of the aerodynamic achievements, such as the mock near-collisions of the Red Arrows, were probably lost on the younger audience who merely assumed they were watching pale re-enactments of computer games. A lack of entrance fee boosted the number of spectators, perhaps a lost economic asset, but the knock-on effect was that there was not a vacancy in any hotel on the island. One of the draw-backs, bizarrely, was the sun and clear sky. This meant that we had to strain our eyes every time the planes swooshed across the horizon. The solution: stage the show on the north part of the island near my home and introduce entry fees. Voila!
