Review

there is an overwhelming seriousness to glenn browns work that is somewhat undermined by the in-jokey titles. or should that be, there is an overwhelming jokiness to glenn browns work that is somewhat undermined by an underlying seriousness.either way a sense of failure is apparent with such a desperate need to entertain.for sure, browns ability as a painter of great technical accomplishment is something that neither needs re-iterating nor scrutinising. Neither the obvious unhealthy precedent he lays upon himself to labour at a process so tedious its almost like watching paint dry.what does transpire is a 'so what' attitude when wandering around this exhibition.o.k have some drugs and get off on it (maybe this is enough)but the stand-offish lack of emotion is enough to tire the most enthusiastic fan.yes there is the fashionable blankness. yes there is an ambiguity. but for all its aspirations, it is an art that in the future will appear in 'how to paint' books for the retro ironic generation.
