The Thames and Hudson Dictionary of Design since 1900 by Guy Julier The book is a handy size for decent handbags, the cover is a glossy black and grey with an image of the shining kettle designed by Richard Sapper in 1984 for that gimmicky and slick Alessi, a company most familiar to all. It is soft covered and compact, perhaps it will fall apart went eager designing hands wrench tight pages apart, but for now it feels good and encourages a softer touch.
Begin with the ‘How to use this book’ page, the first page. The subject guide will give a rough idea of what you can read about, and the introduction is a dull discussion of the study of design history looking at social, technological and industrial implications. Feminism and design is found under the letter F, but Aino Aalto will not be found next to her husband Alvar Aalto under the letter A.
It is printed in Singapore and will be out on the 18th of October for the bargain price of £8.95.
