Excellent movie. Above all distinguished by the quality of the acting. The film combines a somewhat bleak view about human and in particular family relationships with very credible characterisation against a convincing background of publishers and writers in contemporary France.
The key protagonist, Etienne, is a literary celebrity. The consequences of his egotism and the recognition that others give to him are played out to the cost of those around him. The film, however, is a comedy.
Much better on families than the over-rated, implausible Festen.
