Never been able to manage to watch the whole of this film. Missed the first four minutes this time. As a teenager I abused the joys of VCR with a fasforward to the buttery scene, the rest was a pretentious blur to my juvenile mind. Later I saw the first 20 minutes and again my system rejected it as so much bullshit.

The key to my liking it came from a BBC documentary by Alan Yentob about Brando, seeing old footage of him fooling around verbally with a banal interviewer made me realise that Marlon had a sense of humour. Now his dialogue in Last Tango is suffused with a bite of sarcasm, rather than only overblown existential angst. As it comes into focus, with the brain on the right wavelength, is seen the exceptional beauty of Bertolucci's depth and light filled scenes. The relationship of Schneider and Brando disturbs and lingers, and the french fiancee seems like somre sort of remnant of naivete.

It's good.
