I hate Christmas, that is my merry slogan. The supermarkets and big shops are closed for one day, to prepare for the boxing day sales, the TV schedules are packed full of specials, which are not, the streets are emptyish, and the pub is only open for a few hours to sozzle the nerves down a bit, a solitary wet flake of globally warmed snow may fall on London, and so fulfill a few compulsive gamblers' dreams.
