Leaving an onion in a fridge may seem like a red herring, but in fact is an excellent way of freshening the air inside your cool box. Contrary to what you might expect, it doesn't make all the food smell of onion, but gets rid of all the wafts of air that accumulate in there. A half-onion is particularly conducive to this end.
