I read a short story by Ian McEwan recently which was pacy, quite readable with some clever observational sentences, but afterwards realised that it was a bit shallow, with a trite ending, and always straining for an intellectual wholeness/profundity it could never find. He seems to be a very middle-brow writer for those that think they're too smart to read John Grisham.
