I think sock thickness definitely makes a difference. When you buy hiking socks the sales people are trained to sell you a size larger than you ask for (without telling you) so you can wear thick hiking socks (when they are trained). I've tried wearing ultra thin stockings to encourage my feet to fit into coveted shoes that only stock in tiny sizes, but there's only so far you can go. Camper shoes are always a size smaller than standard European sizes. American shoes have really weird sizes that even the people in the cool trainer shop on Neil Street can't understand. There seem to be a lot of halves and quarters which suits me. I'm 39.5.
