Winner of the Guardian First Book Award. Written in clear school of the New Yorker style this book is the beginners guide to a messy war that was largely ignored by the international community the fact of which we are continually reminded. Factual detail accompanies considered musing and personal anecdotes. Characters and their lives are introduced, intertwined with rhetorical questions and tangents, forgotten as we meet another only to be encountered again later on in this spaghetti junction of killing, rape and racism.
