Review

This is an excellent book. Cover reads ‘ “A classic … the kind of book that changes lives” Fay Weldon’, though I am not sure that people can be that changeable I think that the book could be worth reading for many…. mostly men perhaps? We are used to the kind of sexism encountered in most literature we read since the majority of it is written by men and sadly we take it for granted. We know how it is to admire a heaving bosom, a dainty ankle, and the delicate features of a woman no matter what our sexuality. We can not help but know the importance of the chase, and feel awed by the heroic act of bedding as many women as possible, and the monotony of wives rather than husbands. This book is not that. String beans and bad sex life, babies and the search for an alternative is the life of the women in this book. We are reminded that our heroes are men, and the role model for women in culture remains a wish washy character in the background some times to be pursued, some times to be loved or hated, if lucky. The truth of women’s lives is forgotten and irrelevant and this book remembers it. Though finally French concludes that ultimately (to spoil the story) if women are unwilling to accept their lot, forgo their ambitions for that of their gods, they are left to wander beaches odd and alone.
