well, I wrote a short piece about this film 3 months ago after seeing it in argentina, as a southamerican in favour of legalising even cocaine I still loved this film.
first, you must forget about the nationality of the director and what the directors born in his country should or should not be looking at. I wish all USA citizens were like this young journalist who wanted to make a film about another side of the drug trade. OF COURSE AN IMAGE OF THE GROWERS AND A MENTION OF THE PROBLEM OF GUERRILLA AND PROSECUTIONS COULD HAVE BEEN INTERESTING, BUT THEN WE WOULD BE CERTAINLY COMPLAINING ABOUT SHALLOWNESS.
SECOND : THE ACTING. who does not fall in love with CATALINA Sandino, the actress, who indeed is in her first cinema appearance after a couple of one-day roles on soap operas on TV. Superb acting, not only from her. THA MAN IN NUEVA YORK, who helps them as newly arrived in trouble, is actually a man who in nueva york does this very same job. and so on you could find similar stories of similar people in the film.
WHICH, THIRDLY, IS A DOCUMENTARY AS MUCH AS FICTION, AND THERE LIES A NEW APPROACH TO FILM MAKING IN A DECADE FULL OF DOCUMENTARIES AND DOCUFICTION, THIS ONE IS VERY ELGANT AND WELL MADE. NOW WE NEED MORE FILMS FROM MORE POINTS OF VIEW: LIKE IN THE ALEPH OF J L BORGES, THIS COMPLEX NEEDS US TO LOOK AT IT FROM ALMOST INFINITE POINTS, TIMES AND DISTANCES. THIS IS ONLY ONE POSSIBILITY. GO AND SEE THIS MAINSTREAM FILM, GO AND SEE THIS BLOCKBUSTER... THIS IS NOT A MASTERPIECE, THIS IS NOT A MASTERPIECE, AND NOBODY SAID SO
