Back in the sterile white walled gallery dotted with its well spaced paintings of medium size and worth. Essenhigh has gone backwards from what I remember of her old art. The fluidity of line and image, of foreground and background pulled together, is achieved only in her painting of sun-bathers. The others have the poorly applied thck to thin oil paint technique of advance art schoolers, with scrubby thoughtless expanses of paint just filling space. They combine tepid application with unappealing figures reminiscent of scary childrens book illustrations. The point is... in an past pollock and picasso... to make yet more mediocre visions in paint.
