Review

I went to this recently and had completely forgotten about it until I read the above. Now what I remember is a lot of ugly, apparently uninteresting work. Seems I blocked it out. There were some sculptural pictures that seemed to have been made out of polystyrene and spray paint and various traps - literally, devices for trapping animals. Best was a flat foam rectangle with a circular indentation somewhere near the middle. Elsewhere, a few snapshots revealed that this had been made by pressing the nose of an enormous glider plane against it - and this jokey absurdism made it worse for me. While the accompanying texts for this sort of thing say 'engages with context' and 'examines place in framework of institution', the work so often is saying 'ha ha futile, ha ha impotent'. It's hard not to feel that the real message is 'what were you expecting? why not just leave?'
