Review

Well I find blood guts and gore very hard to stand, and the death of Liam Neeson early in the film even more so. But while Orlando Bloom certainly can't make up for this loss (although in the plot that is exactly what he does), we can hardly complain when Jeremy Irons steps onto the stage in the form of the honourable Tiberius. With the dual performance of Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson, as well as the familiar themes of humanity's capacity for love, loyalty and tolerance, this is the closest Ridley Scott could get to an echo of Roland Joffe's masterpiece The Mission. But these themes remain a dim memory in my mind. They are overshadowed by the modern horrors of a Lord of the Rings-style warfare and an unconvincing romance between the Princess of Jerusalem and our hero, Orlando.
