I don't think Jarvis Cocker, of Pulp fame, was too far off the mark when he mentioned in an interview that to find what you want in a charity shop, you need to go to camden market and pay £5 more. I've certainly noticed that second hand shops have been going downhill in terms of stock, and uphill in terms of price, which takes the fun out of it really. In the early-90s in Winchester, it wasn't unusual to pick up tailored suits for a tenner at what was then called the Spastics Society. As you pointed out, first hand items can be bought at cheaper prices than second hand, thanks to the likes of Primark, Matalan. Do check out Top Hat on Putney Bridge. Vintage tailored clothes, with an eccentric Mr.Ben serving you to boot.
