We lost by 140 odd runs. It was a fun day nonetheless. Ogden played with the megaphone. Everyone chipped in a few comments. It became a second voice for us, like a ventriloquest. No tea, so we went to Sainsbury to get our own. Nothing like a warm welcome. Good thing I had my 1976 A-Z; Dragon lane is a bit cagey. Oh, and no umpires either, so we had to do our own. Started off well, but then crumbled. Need to sort out the middle batting, what-o. During the match, was wondering why I play cricket. I do enjoy it, but it isn't my strongest sport. It's fairly expensive to maintain and cumbersome too. Wondered about the opposition as well. They certainly didn't look like they played other sports. One of them was nicknamed W.G.Grace. On the way back, we all elected 'man of the match' and 'dick of the day'. It became a strange public relations exercise, you discovered a public persona in yourself that then became private. Played vaguely well, i.e. still dropped catches but bowled a low-scoring over and went out fighting on 13 as tail-ender. We were all fined by one another and had drinks in the bar. Good, clean rollicking fun.
