Edith Piaf was nicknamed the little sparrow because from her frail frame an almighty voice emanated. Since the 1960s it seems that there has been a wholesale rejection of power voices in French musical exports in favour of very girly light voices. Cue Francoise Hardy, Gainsborough’s girls, Vanessa Paradis and more recently Keren Ann, singing of subject such as ‘sweet lemonade’ and heavily influenced by Bossa Nova beats. Is it that a childish female voice is as popular in France as le mini skirt? or is it that this is the image the French prefer to export?
