For a cheap day out nothing beats Speakers Corner on a Sunday afternoon. It was a trip that I had been meaning to make for several years and one that did not disappoint. All manner of fanatics, loons, prophets, geniuses and leaders are too be found preaching, screeching, shouting and making music. As expected Palestine/Israel are prevalent issues, as well as the war in Iraq and the USA. Slightly more unusual is the man talking of black supremacy, ‘white folk are inferior’. Unfortunately an inferior white man in the crowd stood ridiculing his ideas. A poignant sight demonstrating that history does not allow this type of racism to be taken seriously, whilst the other type still exists. It rendered the rant meaningless in this world and, at the same time, sadly showing its (probable) origins. Another man sat amidst a carpet of placard banging his tambourine in music festival style waiting and hoping for world peace. More mysterious was the silent man on the fence who I believe wanted an audience of quality rather than quantity to discuss with him the contradictory statements on his posters re God, Jesus and Christianity. Here you can come and shout and holler if you want to be heard. There is certainly enough passing traffic to attract an audience to listen to all kinds of protests, making for good therapy for those who need attention. It seems not far from performance, or art that encourages interaction, and certainly is not a bad platform for it (plus free range sausages and others of similar wholesomeness are available from a little green hut near by.)
