At work when it all happened yesterday. I was supposed to be in Hertford Magistrates' court in the afternoon, so set off early. I walked from Temple to Finsbury Park to get a train (in the end, others could not make it and the case was adjourned). I was listening to the radio on the walk through Farringdon and Upper Street. The mood was resigned calm. No panic. People looking glum but getting on with it. The only signs of mass outpouring of emotion were a couple of people in Upper Street hugging and crying, and crowds outside pubs and estate agents looking at the screens.

The most striking symptom was the parade of emergency vehicles barreling Ionescu-esque towards town.

By mid afternoon, some London attitudes were back; a sneering man begrudging my squeezing past him to get a seat at at Waterloo, and glaring when my eyes wandered to his 'Standard'. Train calm and quiet until we got back to the 'burbs where teenage girls sat shocked-looking on shop doorsteps, and people seemed more nervous than in the calm eye of the storm.
