Review

Willis is a self taught artist who expresses his art through line drawing. He has been classed as an art brut artist because of the nature of his work. He believes by drawing he can can keep the little creatures from doing him harm.

Willis is still is a recluse artist lost in the world of his own thoughts. He used to be a 1960s installation/painter until the mid 1970s, but lost his way and had to be taken into care in the 80s. A website has be set up to showcase his new work. Sadly he destroyed all of his pre-1970s artwork in a bonfire. A few poems survive from his days in the asylum, here is one below.

Mr Scratch, November 1986

I eat, I eat , I don’t sleep I scratch, I scratch, I strike matches I watch, I watch, until my feet drop off I smell, I smell, something nasty in the well

My hands, my hands, what have you done with my hands? My glands, my glands swollen and bruised like the land The taste , the taste, of undigested food on the floor This is not mentioned because I am a bore

I eat, I eat but I don’t sleep I scratch, I scratch, I like my mattress big and fat The scum, the scum burning holes in the sun The room, the room is a shoe box in a corner

To see his website go to: www.geocities.com/willisartbrut
