We are in the the war of the worlds, on one side those that crave certainty, in the middle those that plod along in normitude, and on the other side an avant-garde that has unpicked its own existence, and on some other side the usual suspects defending capital. An ugly war of worlds, because there is no aspidistra for the enlightened to keep flying. Did you know that the aspidistra is a spiny houseplant?

Anway I enjoyed this exciting film. Despite a hurried happyish ending, Tom Cruise's silly little leather jacket, and despite aliens always looking and acting so boring in films. The destruction and tension are pacily well rendered. And the story is good from the ordinaryish man's point of view, rather than say, Will Smith, flying a jet. It's quite scary wehn everthing seems out of control, and the aliens are mysterious wreakers of death. Then like malnourished pot plants they suddenly just shrivel up and die, and the film ends. History does tend to produce whimpers to follow bangs.
