Review

I have not long ago finished Mishima's 'Spring Snow', the first in the series of the four books that comprise 'The Sea of Fertility'. Please read it as the antithesis of heavy-handed writing (I read it directly after trying The Da Vinci Code!). It is so achingly beautifully written: the plot serving as a vehicle for Mishima to get existential on us and to delight in his own skill as a wordsmith. I don't usually like writing that smacks of pretension and self-consciousness, but Mishima's prose has the power to soothe and to excite in such a delicious and understated way.....
