Review

I've never seen a full-blown version of Oilver Twist. I've always been too busy scoffing Easter eggs and Christmas puds. Last Saturday I had a chance to correct this state of cultural negligence, not without putting away a few popcorns. A mighty cinema experience. You get thrown right into Oliver's world, from his orphanage in Northampton to mis/fortunes in London. Always following his back, hoping that things will improve for him, while laughing and cussing at his dangerous encounters. Liked the Polanski touch about begging off a mean farmer and meeting a kindly old woman on his blistering trek to London. Just the sort of people Roman would have met as a young scamp in WW2. But what is all this talk in the papers about the story being too run-of-the-mill and not gritty enough? Clearly our film reviewers are a hardened bunch. Isn't forced child labour, infant mortality, serfdom, brutality, hostage-taking, abused trust and murderous thuggery gritty enough? I dare say of done my bit to understand the seedier part of life. Now, it's for them to open their eyes and see how this film parallels the evils that bedevil the world in our nicely toasted morning papers.
