Review

An unusual film, seems different from most war films. There is no war, only preparation, but still plenty of action. The hero is rude and obstinate with the NCOs and officers. He makes friends with the anti-heros and gets them out of the war, thereby robbing them of a chance of heroism. The baddies don't get such a bad deal, even if they might make you feel quite aggressive towards them. That was my reaction, I must confess! During the masculine-feminine scenes, the camera lingers somewhat lovingly on the buff, naked recruits. But does this make the film any more appealing to the female audience who tend to shun such numbers? Apparently not. Though the film purports to be a critique of violence, aggression, beastliness etc. it is all too easy to cast this aside and view it as an exercise in protein pumping. Anyone for Amelie?
