Jamie Theakston is always there. I enjoyed it. The madding crowd. Wall to wall paintings. Nothing exceptional. But honest. Here we are selling art for your walls. And some of it is not bad. The worst stuff cannot be hidden with pristine display, as in a gallery. Here it will be jostled and knocked down by more visually aggressive friends.

Lots of acquaintances, heads cocked to fire at more important people. If you're in the right mood and get away before they do, can be fun chitchatting. The usual hierarchy building, mystique being the only way we have of raising prices. Introduced myself to a big shot gallerist (by profile an easy going type of guy), he passed me on to an assistant who had a busy schedule and no room for anyone, and I was soon spat out of the fair feeling slightly foolish but invigorated as after running back to the safety of the beach from a cold dip in the raging sea.
