Review

points:

detective fiction is all fiction, the narrative drive is just magnified by mystery. Both are the question what's going to happen?

the detective may/ or may not bear some resemblance to a reality that once existed/ it doesnt matter.. they are their own universe

the women, locations, feelings, descriptions, plots are reusable

Marlowe is Chandler's fantasy of how a man should be: tough, literate funny, free, poor, noble, sexy.

the bit where our hero explains everything to another character is the strangest moment. the author can reconfigure all the plot elements as he wishes (our credulity is a limit often ignored).

there is a class element: the gangsters and new money, and old rich, and blacks and jews (both usually racistly portrayed)...

a blonde will appear

the police are often brutal scary out of control beasts. made subhuman by the corrupt system.

they are v. easy to read.
