Review

Sylvie Guillem danced as Manon and is apparently a legendary ballet dancer, still dancing brilliantly at 40. The crowd were delirious and encores were endless. I can't and don't want to have enough expertise to judge her dancing over any other dancer's, but would tend to feel that the crowd were succumbing to the star mentality, wholly in keeping with the artifice of ballet as an art or a discipline or whatever it is. Anyway it must be nice for her to be the centre of so much applause.

On that subject, I was in a cafe in Soho on Monday night and the peace of the place was ruined by the noisome coughs of a well-known British actor who I had previously rather liked. Happily those of us that recognised him contrived not to.

I am told ballet is pure sex. A bizarre kind of sex, in my view. But Manon is clearly a passionate piece and I was almost convinced....
