For the Michaelmas term Alan Michael has painted some pictures of some shoes, (as well as other stuff) one on top of the other, with a close up of that shoe in the background and more of the shoe in the foreground. I found this work to be the most technically pleasing and feel that his painting is definitely his forte. There are rather mixed messages coming from his other work and I am not even sure that he know quite what he wants to communicate. He has been talking to his gallerist about this and apparently have some thing to do with design nostalgia, high-street Modernism, religion, musical iconography, psychoanalysis and art cinema. Michael I give you a B++ for technical skills, and a C for interpersonal skills and communication. Not bad work for the autumn term but I hope you’ll find some thing to be excited about for your spring/summer show in Cologne.
