Review

My teenage notion that Ralph Fiennes was the master of the universe has been shattered. Or was Ralph's bad acting a result of some attempt to empathise with Justin Quayle's lover/wife Tessa, 'acted' by Rachel Weisz. The two of them seemed to be united by little other than a stilted but total failure to relate. Acting to fit in with the totally unconvincing storyline and equally unconvincing 'worthy' considerations? Too many unconvincing culture clashes too - Fernando Meirelles' slums transplanted from Brazil to southern Africa simply don't work, and the anachronistic portrayal of the ('gentle'?) English ruling classes abroad seems hopelessly unconvincing... Even if this film is bad hyperbole though or just plain wrong, it is a horrifying indictment of the functioning our society though, and should if the truth be told helpfully inspire a moment or two of soul-searching.
