VS is the master of the "would have been" observation... he would have been a big man in his own culture sort of thing. Naipaul is the lover of all the accuracy of glimpsed possibities of peoples' lives. Magic seeds is better than its first part half a life, not the master at his greatest, and tinged with his peevish views on race, but still better than pretty much everything else.
