i found Carnegie's paintings dullish.. I agree with what you say about the pathetic need to justify contemporary painting as conceptual, most good art (and bad for that matter) has always involved examining and exposing its medium or its conventions.

Why Carnegie's painting dull? i suppose because of joylessness, the need to show off photographically based virtuosity of realism, the larger scale ones lacked the finesse and paint tension of the smaller ones. The best are the dark still lives, weirdish and reminding one of some odd British painting from the 30s. The endless need to imitate the way photographs show the world bores me. Richter is enough.
