Review

mesmerising. how primitive I am. a contestant chooses from a range of sealed boxes containing between 1 and 250,000 pounds, then he or she has the other boxes opened three at a time, with a mysterious and most probably non-existent banker offering he/she a deal for the box at each interval.

and we the viewers believe and are fascinated by the mystery of that box, and will watch credulously till the end to know what it contains. Pandora had nothing on this. obviously it's random, but we to prefer to believe in luck, fate, will, and choice, and that there is a skill in how our preprogrammed lives, or at least tv shows, pan out. We must, if not determinism rules and despair follows. Noel Edmonds is reborn as skilled huckster winding up the tension as though it all matters, he is the god of this universe and the devil/banker at the end of the telephone, and the production team pick people to play who say their thoughts, of course the only talent really needed is the ability to do simple division to find out what the box is worth as any moment, but the players prefer voodoo hope to mental arithmetic, as we all do.
