Problem with Rachel Carson is, er, she was wrong. DDT was not the monster chemical she said it was, and the crusade against DDT has killed lots and lots of people in the Third World. Nor is our world the horrible polluted world she said it would become. On the contrary, the water and air are cleaner than when she wrote the book, and there are more forests today in the US than at the time of Thoreau. And not because she launched the environmental movement, but because pollution is inefficiency, and wealthy societies are inherently more efficient than poor ones. But we all have to have our myths, and Rachel Carson is one of them. Ignorance is bliss.
