Review

Be rude about this book if you want, but apart from the beginning which I a found boring series of examples and statistics, there is always more space needed for more feminist literature. Once you get in to the evidence you can skim past it but the fact remains that it is relevant.. I felt parts to be highly pertinent though largely I thought because of being a woman and wondered if Naomi had successfully communicated to the other half of the population. Written in this semi academic way I thought that the points could be got by men (and sorry to insult so many) but perhaps not to bring any kind of feelings home (horrible expression), you tell me. Men continue to draw attention to female bodies in a way that women do not in social situations (only amongst women, may be that is worse), so like TV, adverts and so on constant comparisons must be made - women wear tighter clothes to allow such comparisons. There is no doubt that both sexes face this kind of fascism but we all know that women are under more scrutiny. At the moment I have gladly noticed that there is an advert on TV for a car that has refreshingly untoned male bodies on display.
