‘Rise to the occasion’ Isabel Nolan 1 February – 8 February 2006

Preview Wednesday 1 February 2005 6–8pm

Four is pleased to present, ‘Rise to the occasion’, an exhibition of new work by Isabel Nolan.  Nolan’s works, which include drawings, paintings, sculpture and animation, describe a certain anxiety about understanding (or attempting to understand) life as ‘meaningful’, and the difficulty of formalising and describing experiences and ideas.

These are intimate, small-scale works, which often allude to commonplace moments of fear, aspiration, loneliness or love.  The works encompass a range of iconographic elements including descriptive drawings, abstract motifs and text, some or all of which are frequently combined in individual pieces.

Recent group exhibitions include ‘Ireland at Venice 2005’, the 51st Venice Biennale, ‘Superbia 2’, Cork, 2005; ‘The Yugoslav Biennial for Young Artists’, Serbia-Montenegro, 2004; ‘Coalesce - With All Due Intent’, Model Arts and Nyland Gallery, Sligo, 2004;  ‘Thinking about Ideas’, Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast 2004; and solo shows ‘Everything I said let me explain’, Project Arts Centre, Dublin, 2005 and ‘Death creeps in through the mouth’, Goethe Institute, Dublin 2003.  Forthcoming shows include ‘Ireland at Venice 2005’, at the Lewis Glucksman Gallery, U.C.C., Cork and a group show at the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, New York.  Nolan graduated from N.C.A.D. in 1995 and has just completed an M.A. in Visual Arts Practice in Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology.  Nolan was born in 1974 and is currently based in Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, Dublin.

Forthcoming exhibition: Pockets, 9,10 & 11th February 2006.

Gallery hours are: Saturday 12pm–5pm & by appointment. For further details please contact Lee Welch on +353 (0) 86 365 1256
