I think it started out because a cartoonist was too scared to draw pictures of muhammad for a kids book on the life of the prophet. So the Danish newspaper commissioned 40? cartoonists to do so for the paper. These free speech issues tend to get hijacked by racists, just as relativism is stolen by the christian right to justify teaching creationism. Still.
